"A Bright Angelic Greeting" - text by James Blain, tune MAGNUM MYSTERIUM by Robert J. H. Mayes11/9/2021 Advent; Gabriel; Mary; Annunciation; James Blain; This text by Pastor James Blain is a great Advent text based on the Annunciation. I do not know Pastor Blain, and only am aware of this one particular hymn text of his. There may be more he has written that I do not know. But working with this fine text, I hope he does have more, and if not, I hope he continues writing. My original tune, MAGNUM MYSTERIUM, is wed to Blain's text and is embedded as a PDF after the text of the hymn. It is a favorite tune of mine. A Bright Angelic Greeting James Blain 1. A bright angelic greeting Shines out in darkest night; Strong Gabriel announces The coming of the Light. Young Mary is to bear Him, The Son of God Most High, And in her womb receive Him, Who made both earth and sky. 2. But now a message brighter Has come to us this day: "All hail, the Lord is with you In this most wondrous way His holy body present And sacrificial blood, With bread and wine now meet you, And join you to your God." 3. No mere angelic greeting Has startled us in fear, But Christ's own gracious Promise Is what we now do hear, He vows to us forgiveness, Salvation, peace and life, A Kingdom bright in heaven, Beyond all earthly strife. 4. The Spirit overshadows All doubt and gives us faith To trust our Savior's promise And meet Him face to face, That in this wondrous Supper That seems but bread and wine He gives His own true body And blood for us to dine. 5. So now with faith, like Mary, We banish doubt and fear, Christ now is right before us And boldly we draw near; More glorious than angels, Yet Mary's humble Child, Who gives His life to save us And we are reconciled. 6. So, Lord, now let it happen According to Your Word; We are Your humble servants Who trust what we have heard. As Mary did receive You, Warm nestled in her womb, Our hands and lips caress You, Our open hearts make room. 7. Lord, You are truly with us, In flesh and spirit one, But we await Your Advent As God's great, glorious Son. The world in pangs of childbirth Awaits the awesome Day When we, at heaven's banquet, See You in bright array. 76 76 D Text copyright © 2000, James Blain. All rights reserved.
