Exegetical and Historical Thoughts thrown in
2nd Sun. after Christmas; Lk. 2:41-49; Baue; temple; Pastor Fred Baue is an emeritus pastor, and is also a published hymn writer and author. Pastor Baue is the author of the familiar communion hymn, "What Is This Bread" (LSB 629). So several years ago, when Fred contacted me to work on a collaboration with him, I was excited. The following is Fred's text, "In The Temple" and begins with the account of Jesus as a boy who went to the temple (Lk. 2:41-49). However, it also traces all the times where Jesus interacts with the Temple either in fact or in prediction. The text has a unique meter (9999) that matches no tune in Lutheran Service Book. I'm always up for the challenge, though. It is wed to my tune TEMPLO CORPORUM (which means "Temple of the Body" in Latin). IN THE TEMPLE - text by Frederic W. Baue, b. 1946; tune by Robert J. H. Mayes 1. In the Temple, Jesus, two and ten, Puzzled all the learned, holy men, Puzzled blessed Mary and her spouse: “I must be within my Father’s house.” 2. In His Father’s house He taught by day: “I am now the Life, the Truth, the Way. Come to me all you by sin oppressed. Come to me and I will give you rest.” 3. Jesus in the Temple, in a rage, Throwing every table, every cage, Shouted to them: “This my Father grieves! You have made His house a den of thieves!” 4. “Throw this temple down, and in three days You will see it stand. I will it raise.” His disciples knew not what He said. He would raise his body from the dead. 5. Jesus, Lamb of God, upon the Tree, Final sacrifice for you and me, Risen from the dead, alive He stands. No more need for temples made with hands. 6. “In my Father’s house,” our Savior said, “There are many rooms. Though you be dead, I will raise you up. This Word is true: I will go and make a place for you.” © 2010 Fred Baue 9.9.9.9. For The Second Sunday after Xmas Luke 2: 41-49
