Translation: "Now Christ Has Ascended the Heavenly Sky" by Magnus Felix Ennodius (473-521 A.D.)10/14/2021 Ascension; Medieval; Latin; translation; Ennodius; Magnus Felix Ennodius; Ennodius hymnI translated this hymn text years ago in seminary, in the spring of 2000 as I recall. I have set it to a tune. Eventually I'll learn how to drive this thing and put the music up as well. "Now Christ Has Ascended the Heavenly Sky"
Magnus Felix Ennodius (473-521 A.D.) trans. Robert J. H. Mayes, 2000 1) Now Christ has ascended the heavenly sky. Before, by His Passion, the grim grave did die. The One who was buried, destruction drove out. Death fallen by death, in a victory rout. 2) Proclaim out in singing, O wide world, the deed: Hell’s funeral rite has elapsed with great speed. The Victim destroyed has yet conquered death’s flight That leads out of life, and the gloom mourns its plight. 3) The Son has enjoyed great delight in the scene: As bait, He has captured the Glutton unseen. The Robber of all is now victory’s prize, Ensnared by the net, now no longer to rise. 4) The tight chain falls off from the prisoners’ hands. The serpent’s foul poison is spent from its glands. The humble One Jesus has worn out the Vain, The Lamb is the Victor, the Beast is the slain. 5) More power of Yours is now to us displayed, That You, Holy One, in our nature arrayed And hid in our vestment, as if a mere slave, Have carried us with You in triumph to save. 6) This shows us more pow’r than if from Your domain You crash lightning down to scare hearts yet profane, And make manifest Your Divine nature’s light, Removed by no cov’ring from our fallen sight. 7) But we who are fallen, He came to awake. He willed to be like us, our nature to take. The Church, His possession, He rescued to keep The Shepherd has brought back the wandering sheep. 8) So we in His keeping to Heaven He brings, “Lift up the closed gates,” to the angels He sings. “The Lord who is mighty in battle is here! Who now bears the trophies of victims so dear.”
